How to Keep Your Roses Fresh Longer: 8 Simple Tips

There's nothing quite like receiving a fresh bouquet of roses. With a little care, you can enjoy them for many days. Here are the simple habits our florists in Hollywood, FL use every day to keep roses looking their best, even in the warm Florida climate.

1. Give Them Water Right Away

Roses are thirsty. As soon as your bouquet arrives, place it in a clean vase with fresh, room-temperature water. If your flowers came in a box with a water source, check the level and top it up.

2. Trim the Stems at an Angle

Use sharp scissors or a knife and cut about one inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle. A clean, angled cut gives the stem more surface to drink from. If you can, trim the stems under running water so air doesn't block the stem.

3. Remove Leaves Below the Waterline

Any leaves sitting in the water will start to break down and grow bacteria, which shortens the life of your flowers. Gently remove them, leaving only the leaves above the water.

4. Change the Water Every Day or Two

Fresh water is the single most important thing you can do. Every one or two days, empty the vase, rinse it, refill it and give the stems a small fresh trim.

5. Use Flower Food

If your bouquet came with a packet of flower food, add it to the water. It feeds the roses and helps keep the water clean.

6. Keep Them Cool

Here in South Florida this matters a lot. Keep your roses away from direct sunlight, hot windows, kitchen appliances and air conditioning vents blowing straight at them. A cool spot in the room helps them last much longer.

7. Keep Them Away From Fruit

Ripening fruit releases a natural gas that makes flowers age faster. Keep your bouquet away from the fruit bowl.

8. Revive a Drooping Rose

If a rose starts to droop, recut the stem and place the whole flower in a sink of cool water for about 30 minutes. Often it will lift its head again.
